Three hundred remark able women known as "The Hello Girls" were selected to operate the vital c ommunications network that helped the Allies win. Each came from a differ ent geographic and economic background\, but they were united in their fie rce patriotism and determination to prove that women had a role to play on the war front\, not just the home front. For the first time in U.S. histo ry\, at General John Pershing's urging\, a handful of women volunteered\, too\, specially qualified to operate the most advanced communications tech nology of the day: the telephone switchboard. And while WWI ended some 18 months later for those first female soldiers\, their battle for recognitio n as military veterans continued for six long decades. In time for the cen tennial of WWI\, acclaimed historian and author Elizabeth Cobbs\, Ph.D.\, has written the defining account of the first women to serve in the U.S. A rmy Signal Corps. Set against the backdrop of the suffrage movement and th e communications revolution\, The Hello Girls: America's First Women Soldi ers summons a time when women possessed citizenship only through their fat hers and husbands\; but their story remains a potent key to comprehending how American women became soldiers-and eventually leaders-of their nation. \n\nLocation: Lyceum\nContact Phone: 703.746.4994\nFees: $10. The girls and women of the WLAA\, also known a s Farmerettes\, shocked American society\, as they were paid equally with male farm laborers\, worked eight-hour days - and wore pants. Eventually\, Farmerettes would work on family farms in orchards in 25 states\, includi ng Virginia. Students at Hollins College (now Hollins University) and Rando lph-Macon Women's College (now Randolph College) worked on local farms. Around th e North Carolina village of Guilford Courthouse in the late winter of 1781 \, two weary armies clashed on a cold\, wet afternoon. American forces und er Gen. Nathanael Greene engaged Lord Cornwallis's British army in a bitte r two-hour battle of the Revolutionary War. The frightful contest at Guilf ord was a severe conflict in which troops made repeated use of their flint lock muskets\, steel bayonets and dragoon swords in hand-to-hand fighting that killed and wounded about eight hundred men. Historian John R. Demographic estimates sugge st that fifty percent of whites in the United States have at least one anc estor who belonged to the Ku Klux Klan at some point in its history. Edwar d Ball\, a descendant of a Klansman\, tells the story of his ancestor. Bal l's great-great grandfather\, Constant Lecorgne\, had a career in white te rror of notable and bloody completeness: massacres\, night riding\, masked marches\, street rampages?all part of a tireless effort that he and other Klansmen made to restore white power when it was threatened by the emanci pation of four million enslaved African Americans. To offer a non-white vi ew of the Ku-klux\, Ball includes the voices of descendants of African Ame ricans who were once victimized by "our Klansman." \n \nThis program is f ree\, but pre-registration is required through Zoom. Even as individual features and artifact as semblages\, these finds are highly significant\, but when taken together a long with a wealth of historical documentary data\, a historic maritime la ndscape is taking form.\n\nDr. Eleanor Breen is a historical archaeologist with two decades of experience on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. To study them\, each ship was disarticulated an d the individual timbers were laser scanned\, allowing researchers to virt ually reassemble the ships and develop theoretical reconstructions of how they would have looked when they were in use. These highly accurate digita l timber models were 3D printed and assembled by a master ship model maker \, further informing these reconstructions. The four ships are now on two different preservation journeys. The Hotel Indigo ship was sent to the Con servation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University for conservation by freeze drying\, and the three Robinson Landing ships were submerged in a p ond at Ben Brenman Park this spring. In August 1837\, a Georgetown resident sold Dorcas Allen and her four children to James H. Birch\, a District of Columbia slave trader. He trans ported them to the Duke Street pen\, and that evening Allen killed her two youngest children and was restrained from harming the others. In October\ , she appeared before the District Court in Alexandria and pleaded not gui lty by reason of insanity. Her case drew the attention of prominent white men\, such as then-Congressman John Quincy Adams and District Attorney Fra ncis Scott Key\, but remains a story largely unknown. This is story of Afr ican American agency in the most desperate of circumstances?when an enslav ed mother feels death is better for her children than life in bondage.
