I n an ill-fated attempt to incite a slave insurrection\, they seized the fe deral arsenal\, took hostages\, and retreated to a fire engine house where they barricaded themselves until a contingent of US Marines battered thei r way in on October 18. The raiders were routed\, and several were capture d. Soon after\, they were tried\, convicted\, and hanged. Among Brown's fi ghters were five African American men-John Copeland\, Shields Green\, Dang erfield Newby\, Lewis Leary\, and Osborne Perry Anderson-whose lives and d eaths have long been overshadowed by their martyred leader and who\, even today\, are little remembered. Originally built as temporary housing for African America n war industry workers in the 1940s\, the homes served as permanent afford able housing for Alexandria residents for 65 years. The Ramsey Homes were located in the heart of the Parker-Gray Historic District and the African American enclave known as Uptown. This symposium tackles issues of race an d equity in housing\, of community and community memory\, segregation's i mpact on the African American workforce and the landscape of public housin g. \nThe symposium will combine panel discussions on the building's role i n architectural history\, as well as a presentation on the residents who l ived there for more than six decades.
