Blackmon\nThis Pulitzer prize winning history details how not long after the liberation of African Americans from bondag e at the end of the Civil War\, the new citizens were forced back into inv oluntary servitude. Journalist and University of Virginia Miller Center Fo rum Chair Blackmon reveals the stories of those who fought against the use of selective enforcement of laws and discriminatory sentencing to reensla ve Black people during an "Age of Neoslavery'' brought about by the South' s exploitation of a clause in the 13th Amendment. He describes the way com panies and governments profited by "leasing" the labor of those they accus ed and convicted of petty crimes. Alexandria used such labor to repair and build streets\, alleys and sewers soon after the conservative democrats r egained control of the local government in 1873. \n\n\nLocation: See Detai ls\nFees: $125\, The book is not included in the ticket price and should b e purchased separate from a local bookstore.\nAudience: Anyone may attend\ nTags: Black History\, Black History Museum\, Equity\, Museums\n\nImport t his event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.a spx?id=1&si=56873\n\nWeb resources:\n\nBuy Tickets Here\nhttps://shop.alex andriava.gov/Events.aspx\n DTEND:20240114T020000Z DTSTAMP:20231211T173000Z DTSTART:20240113T230000Z LOCATION:See Details SEQUENCE:4 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Tables of Conscience-Slavery By Another Name TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:6b8276ea-a0e5-47f3-ba5e-5860a7efa02a URL:https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Events.aspx X-COA-DTSTAMP:20231211T173000Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Black History,Black History Museum,Equity,Museums DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=56859\n\nAuthor and University of Virginia Professor of American Studies and History Grace Elizabeth Hale will speak to members of the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project abo ut her latest book\, Into the Pines: A Lynching\, A Lie\, A Reckoning on S aturday\, Jan. 27\, 2024 at 1 p.m. at the Lloyd House. It is true w e no longer live with legal segregation\, but a divide between Black and w hite people still exists\, even in Alexandria. We live near each other\, b ut we generally do not have close relationships that cross the "color line " and even when we do\, the dominant white culture can cause miscommunicat ion that can generate anger. Bapt ist.\nEdward Baptist puts slavery at the very center of this nation's poli tical and economic past. Deemed a "radical new interpretation of history" this award winning book details how slavery grew the United States into a modern\, industrial\, capitalist nation. "In the span of a single lifetime \, the South grew from a narrow coastal strip of worn-out tobacco plantat ions to a continental cotton empire."
