This National Historic Landmark\, locat ed at 1315 Duke Street\, was "ground zero" for the domestic slave in the C hesapeake region. Between 1828 and 1861\, thousands of men\, women\, and c hildren were sent by ship or forcibly marched to the lucrative slave marke ts in Natchez and New Orleans. Agents of the slave dealers purchased indiv iduals throughout Maryland and Virginia and brought them to the Alexandria Slave Pen before transport to the Deep South. The names of the enslaved c an be seen today on ship manifests and court records. This year your dona tion will support this important national landmark by helping us create a Freedom House Preservation Fund. Currently\, over 2 million dollars in fun ding is needed to preserve and restore this building. To be able to interp ret its history\, the building must be made safe and accessible for all vi sitors. For nearly two centu ries\, the best jobs in the United States were walled off to everyone but white men. After World War II\, women\, immigrants\, and black men began t o tear those walls down\, helping to build the greatest middle class in hu man history. But the steady disappearance of good jobs\, followed by two o nce-in-a-lifetime economic crises\, eroded that middle class and locked mi llions of people out of the American Dream. History shows how to lift work ers up again\, but not the history that elite white men have sold for deca des. Tankersley's vivid people-driven storytelling\, supported by balanced cutting-edge research\, reveals a path to revival and the essential heroe s of what was\, and can again be\, a great American economy.\n\nJim Tanker sley is an economics reporter for the New York Times. He covers the econom ic policies of the Trump administration and their effects on working peopl e\, the long-running and persistent inequities in the American economy\, a nd\, most recently\, the nation's spiral into recession amid the coronavir us pandemic. Project by project\, the remains of wh arves\, warehouses\, dwellings and houselots\, industries\, privies\, and four ship hull remnants emerged from the waterlogged depths at the Potomac River's edge. The level of preservation under these modern City blocks wa s astounding - 20th century slab-built structures nearly perfectly encapsu lated entire remains of historic waterfront neighborhoods. This talk will provide an update on the research and preservation of the ships' timbers a nd other archaeological finds. Even as individual features and artifact as semblages\, these finds are highly significant\, but when taken together a long with a wealth of historical documentary data\, a historic maritime la ndscape is taking form.\n\nDr. Eleanor Breen is a historical archaeologist with two decades of experience on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. In August 1837\, a Georgetown resident sold Dorcas Allen and her four children to James H. Birch\, a District of Columbia slave trader.
