 e scenarios.   Visitors can also explore the Museum exhibit "The Art of th

 of the Historic Alexandria Museums is raising money to support the preserv
 ation of the Freedom House Museum. This National Historic Landmark\, locat
 ed at 1315 Duke Street\, was "ground zero" for the domestic slave in the C
 hesapeake region. Between 1828 and 1861\, thousands of men\, women\, and c
 hildren were sent by ship or forcibly marched to the lucrative slave marke
 ts in Natchez and New Orleans. Agents of the slave dealers purchased indiv
 iduals throughout Maryland and Virginia and brought them to the Alexandria
  Slave Pen before transport to the Deep South. The names of the enslaved c
 an be seen today on ship manifests and court records.  This year your dona
 tion will support this important national landmark by helping us create a 
 Freedom House Preservation Fund. Currently\, over 2 million dollars in fun
 ding is needed to preserve and restore this building. To be able to interp
 ret its history\, the building must be made safe and accessible for all vi
 sitors. Since so many sites related to the domestic slave trade no longer 
 exist\, it is imperative that we save this most important artifact - the b

 tery areas and burial sites related to the African American Fort community
 .  Join City staff from the Office of Historic Alexandria who will lead a 
 discussion on issues and ideas for demarcating and memorializing these sac
 red areas.  Attendees will meet City staff in the parking lot behind Fort 
 Ward Museum\, and walk to the four major burial sites.  In the event of ra
 in\, the meeting will be held in the reception hall at Oakland Baptist Chu
 rch\, 3408 King Street\, Alexandria.\n\nFort Ward Park's cemetery areas an
 d burial sites are associated with the post-Civil War African American com
 munity known as "The Fort\," which developed on the grounds and vicinity o
 f the present-day Park beginning in the 1870s.  The sites that are the foc
 us of discussion are: The Old Grave Yard\, established at least by 1897\; 
 the Adams family burial site\, which includes the grave of community matri
 arch Clara Adams\; the Clark family burial site\; and the Jackson Cemetery
 \, established on land purchased by Fort resident James Jackson in 1884 th
 at was once part of the earlier Civil War Union fort.  City archaeologists
  and historians will lead discussions at each area that provide context an
 d considerations for possible demarcation of some sites\, preservation iss
 ues\, and additional approaches to memorialization.  Public feedback will 
 be gathered for implementing long-term approaches to care and recognition

  Museum's annual Civil War Christmas in Camp program on Saturday\, Decembe

 a patriotic Civil War Santa Claus\, reenactors in winter camp settings\, p
 eriod decorations\, fort tours\, and kids activities.  The suggested donat
 ion is $2 per person\, and $5 for families.\n\nThe program features a Civi
 l War-era Union Santa Claus\, based on an 1863 cover of Harper's Weekly by
  artist Thomas Nast\, who will interact with the public\, welcome children
  to the reconstructed Officers' Hut\, and visit soldiers in camp.  Reenact
 ors will interpret army life in winter camps that are decorated for the se
 ason\, and celebrate by opening Christmas boxes from home\, singing carols
  of the period around the campfire\, and preparing holiday meals.  The Mus
 eum will be decorated with festive greenery and a Victorian parlor tree.  
 Soldier-led tours of the historic fort will be presented\, and children ca
 n make a Christmas card or ornament.  A variety of Civil War books and "st

 The annual living history event features military and civilian reenactors 
 in camp settings in and around the historic fort.  The program includes ca

 ory units participating are the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry\, Co
 . B\, the 3rd U.S. Regular Infantry\, Co. K\, and the 1st U.S. Artillery\,
  Co. D.  Special interpretations include a U.S. Army Quartermaster tent\, 
 a Union company surgeon\, a Northern schoolmarm who interprets 19th-centur
 y education and pastimes for children\, and a soldier in the reconstructed
  Officers' Hut portraying the daily routine and living quarters of an offi
 cer in the Defenses of Washington.  At 3 p.m.\, the 8th Green Machine Regi
 ment Band will perform a concert of Civil War music on the Museum lawn.  T

 that will be used to demarcate the Old Grave Yard\, the Adams burial plot\
 , the Clark burial site\, and the Jackson Cemetery. The meeting will conve
 ne at the Museum parking lot for a walk to each of the four burial sites. 
 The Beitzell Fence Company\, based in Gainesville\, Virginia\, was awarded
  the project. Installation is scheduled to take place the last week of Sep
 tember. Staff from the Office of Historic Alexandria\, including a City ar
