 w development along Alexandria's historic shoreline triggered archaeologic
 al work in advance of construction. Project by project\, the remains of wh
 arves\, warehouses\, dwellings and houselots\, industries\, privies\, and 
 four ship hull remnants emerged from the waterlogged depths at the Potomac
  River's edge. The level of preservation under these modern City blocks wa
 s astounding - 20th century slab-built structures nearly perfectly encapsu
 lated entire remains of historic waterfront neighborhoods. This talk will 
 provide an update on the research and preservation of the ships' timbers a
 nd other archaeological finds. Even as individual features and artifact as
 semblages\, these finds are highly significant\, but when taken together a
 long with a wealth of historical documentary data\, a historic maritime la
 ndscape is taking form.\n\nDr. Eleanor Breen is a historical archaeologist
  with two decades of experience on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. As Ci
 ty Archaeologist\, Eleanor currently directs the renowned public archaeolo
 gy program and museum that preserves and interprets the buried history of 
 the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. Eleanor came aboard at an exciting time
  in the program's 40-year history as waterfront excavations yielded ships\
 , artifacts\, and features pertaining to Alexandria's maritime heritage.

 e III. The 2022 application process is an annual competitive process to be
 come a Resident Artist at the Art Center.  This year's applicants are scor
 ed by four highlight qualified jurors.\n\nThe Phases\nPhase I considered a
 rtistic merit and was judged blind\, with jurors only viewing the art. Jur
 ors looked for deliberately crafted artwork with an authentic and original
  point of view that reflects an awareness of current trends and aesthetics
  in the larger art world. It was worth a maximum 50 points. Applicants nee
 ded 33 points to advance.\nPhase II was non-blind and considers applicants
 ' backgrounds. Jurors looked for artists who can explain their art and who
  want to engage and interact with the public through their work. They revi
 ewed applicants' career highlights and how they have marketed themselves o
 r their work. It was worth a maximum of 25 points. Applicants needed a com
 bined 50 points from Phases I and II to advance.\nPhase III gives the juro
 rs an opportunity to meet and interact with the applicants. This is the fi
 rst time jurors are seeing the art work in-person to review it for quality
 . Jurors will consider the applicants' ability to communicate about their 
 artwork\, with an eye toward their desire to positively engage with the pu
 blic. It is worth a maximum of 25 points. Presentations will be open to th
