 to attend a Community Pre-Construction Meeting about the upcoming project 
 to place the Robinson Landing Site historic ship timbers in Ben Brenman Pa
 rk Pond. The meeting will be held on Tuesday\, April 19\, 5:30 p.m. at Ben
  Brenman Park at the maintenance access point on the pond along Deer Run C
 ourt. Residents and park users are invited to meet the contractor from AEC
 OM\, an engineering and archaeology firm\, who will carry out the work. Ci
 ty of Alexandria staff from the Department of Project Implementation and t
 he Office of Historic Alexandria will also be present at the meeting to pr
 ovide information and answer questions. Field work at Ben Brenman Park is 
 anticipated to occur from May 2-27\, 2022. In the event of severe weather\
 , the meeting will be canceled. \n\nIn 2018\, archaeologists uncovered the
  remains of three wooden ship hulls at the Robinson Landing construction s
 ite. Once excavated\, City archaeologists temporarily stored the ship timb
 ers in tanks of water to keep the wood from decaying. These timbers will b
 e moved to Ben Brenman Park Pond. This medium-term storage solution will c
 ontinue to preserve the wood and allow future study and conservation.\n\nL

 w development along Alexandria's historic shoreline triggered archaeologic
 al work in advance of construction. Project by project\, the remains of wh
 arves\, warehouses\, dwellings and houselots\, industries\, privies\, and 
 four ship hull remnants emerged from the waterlogged depths at the Potomac
  River's edge. The level of preservation under these modern City blocks wa
 s astounding - 20th century slab-built structures nearly perfectly encapsu
 lated entire remains of historic waterfront neighborhoods. This talk will 
 provide an update on the research and preservation of the ships' timbers a
 nd other archaeological finds. Even as individual features and artifact as
 semblages\, these finds are highly significant\, but when taken together a
 long with a wealth of historical documentary data\, a historic maritime la
 ndscape is taking form.\n\nDr. Eleanor Breen is a historical archaeologist
  with two decades of experience on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. As Ci
 ty Archaeologist\, Eleanor currently directs the renowned public archaeolo
 gy program and museum that preserves and interprets the buried history of 
 the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. Eleanor came aboard at an exciting time
  in the program's 40-year history as waterfront excavations yielded ships\
 , artifacts\, and features pertaining to Alexandria's maritime heritage.
