Project by project\, the remains of wh arves\, warehouses\, dwellings and houselots\, industries\, privies\, and four ship hull remnants emerged from the waterlogged depths at the Potomac River's edge. The level of preservation under these modern City blocks wa s astounding - 20th century slab-built structures nearly perfectly encapsu lated entire remains of historic waterfront neighborhoods. This talk will provide an update on the research and preservation of the ships' timbers a nd other archaeological finds. Even as individual features and artifact as semblages\, these finds are highly significant\, but when taken together a long with a wealth of historical documentary data\, a historic maritime la ndscape is taking form.\n\nDr. Eleanor Breen is a historical archaeologist with two decades of experience on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. As Ci ty Archaeologist\, Eleanor currently directs the renowned public archaeolo gy program and museum that preserves and interprets the buried history of the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. Eleanor came aboard at an exciting time in the program's 40-year history as waterfront excavations yielded ships\ , artifacts\, and features pertaining to Alexandria's maritime heritage. \n\nLocation: Lyceum\nContact Person: Eleanor Breen\nContact Phone: 703.74 6.4399\nContact Email: Archaeology@alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Archaeology Museum\, Lecture\, Lyceum\, Museums\, Old & Hist oric Alexandria\, Old Town\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http:/ /apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=43253 DTEND:20220526T010000Z DTSTAMP:20220518T183055Z DTSTART:20220525T230000Z LOCATION:Lyceum SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:AHS Lecture - Archaeology at the River's Edge TRANSP:OPAQUE UID:42601716-b9fd-4a03-89ea-c4ecda3cf4a1 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20220518T183055Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Archaeology Museum,Boards & Commissions,Commission Meeting,Museu ms DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=39704\n\nThis meeting will be h eld virtually\, via zoom.\n\nLocation: Virtual Only\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Archaeology Museum\, Boards & Commissions\, Commission Meet ing\, Museums\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexand riava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=39704\n\nWeb resources:\n\nMeeting Li nk\nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_70hwQJ_5TUOpeVQWaLlo9g\n DTEND:20220616T010000Z DTSTAMP:20220120T145225Z DTSTART:20220615T230000Z LOCATION: Virtual Only SEQUENCE:4 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:VIRTUAL:Alexandria Archaeological Commission (AAC) TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:21c621e7-a3de-475a-9c4e-075d40107b0a URL:https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_70hwQJ_5TUOpeVQWaLlo9g X-COA-DTSTAMP:20220120T145225Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Archaeology Museum,Museums,Old & Historic Alexandria,Summer Fun for Kids DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=39821\n\nHelp Alexandria's City archaeologists excavate a real archaeological site!
