Even though the war destroyed the cotton economy that had long underpinned American slavery and fueled the slave trade\, Confedera tes used slave commerce to shape their experiences of the war\, whether t o help them mobilize for the conflict or to weather the numerous crises i t created. Some speculated wildly in human property to ward off inflation or to buy shares in the slaveholding future for which they fought. Still others traded people to keep them from achieving the freedom the war off ered. For those held in slavery\, meanwhile\, the surviving slave trade d ramatically shaped the ways in which they encountered liberty\, yanking m any back into bondage while inspiring others to risk flight. \n\nDr. Robe rt Colby is an assistant professor at the University of Mississippi and i s the author of An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civil War South. Lecture: An Unholy Traffic\, Slave Trading in the Civil War South\n
\n
From Fort Sumter to Appomattox\, Confederates bought and sold thousands of men\, wo men\, and children through a surviving trade in slaves. Even though the w ar destroyed the cotton economy that had long underpinned American slaver y and fueled the slave trade\, Confederates used slave commerce to shape their experiences of the war\, whether to help them mobilize for the conf lict or to weather the numerous crises it created. Some speculated wildly in human property to ward off inflation or to buy shares in the slavehol ding future for which they fought. Still others traded people to keep the m from achieving the freedom the war offered. For those held in slavery\, meanwhile\, the surviving slave trade dramatically shaped the ways in wh ich they encountered liberty\, yanking many back into bondage while inspi ring others to risk flight. \n

His older brothers played button accordion and fiddle\, a nd his sister became a champion step-dancer. This environment instilled i n Matt an irresistible desire to learn and play Irish traditional music. His first music instruction came in the second grade when he joined the b oys choir at his elementary school. At age nine\, Matt asked his parents if he could learn to play the piano. He began with group piano lessons at a local community college. From there\, he progressed to private lessons in Irish and Classical music with Donna Long\, who has been the greatest influence on Matt's playing. Listening to the host of traditional musici ans who haunt Irish pubs and to innumerable recordings allowed Matt to fo rge his own compelling style of accompanying Irish music.
