Don?t miss your la
st chance to view the special exhibition ?Alexandria Hospital: Women Mobi
lize the Community\,? closing March 31. Health care in Alexandria took a
big step forward when a dynamic group of Alexandria women led by Julia Jo
hns met to organize the Infirmary in December 1872. Through their efforts
\, townspeople were no longer required to go to Richmond or Washington to
receive hospital care. The first purpose-built hospital facility was bui
lt in 1917 on the 700 block of Duke Street thanks to donations funding op
erating rooms\, wards\, and other facilities. Since then\, the hospital h
as lead the way in it has been a leader in healthcare from its nursing sc

nt wind band specializing in military music from the 18th and 19th centur
ies for a concert of late 18th and early 19th-century military music. \n\
nIn 1798\, an advertisement under the heading MARTIAL MUSIC petitioned th
e citizens of Alexandria to organize a wind band "for the accommodation a
nd embellishment" of the city's nine militia companies. The advertisement
called for the establishment of a band of music to be funded by the mili
tia and to be comprised of four clarinets\, two horns\, and two bassoons.
This band\, known as the Alexandria Band\, was one of several "martial"
ensembles that were active in Alexandria and\, more broadly\, Washington

Join Music of the
Regiment\, a period-instrument wind band specializing in military music f
rom the 18th and 19th centuries for a concert of late 18th and early 19th
-century military music. \n
\n
In 1798\, an advertisement under
the heading MARTIAL MUSIC petitioned the citizens of Alexandria to organ
ize a wind band ?for the accommodation and embellishment? of the city?s n
ine militia companies. The advertisement called for the establishment of
a band of music to be funded by the militia and to be comprised of four c
larinets\, two horns\, and two bassoons. This band\, known as the Alexand
ria Band\, was one of several ?martial? ensembles that were active in Ale
xandria and\, more broadly\, Washington City during the early Federal Per
iod (1790?1830). Learn about the interconnectivity of the Alexandria Band
\, the Marine Band\, and the ?Italian? Marine Band ensembles that define
