was a professional historian with the U.S. Army for 34 years\, receiving

f Dorcas Allen\," Dr. Alison Mann will discuss a traumatic event that occ
urred at 1315 Duke Street in 1837 and its legal implications and aftermat
h that was the basis of her 2010 doctoral dissertation. In August 1837\,
a Georgetown resident sold Dorcas Allen and her four children to James H.
Birch\, a District of Columbia slave trader. He transported them to the
Duke Street pen\, and that evening Allen killed her two youngest children
and was restrained from harming the others. In October\, she appeared be
fore the District Court in Alexandria and pleaded not guilty by reason of
insanity. Her case drew the attention of prominent white men\, such as t
hen-Congressman John Quincy Adams and District Attorney Francis Scott Key
\, but remains a story largely unknown. This is story of African American
agency in the most desperate of circumstances?when an enslaved mother fe
els death is better for her children than life in bondage. Dr. Alison Man
n serves as the Historian at the National Museum of American Diplomacy\,
U.S. Department of State as a subject matter expert in the field of diplo
matic history\, 19th century American history\, public history\, and educ

1871. Today the historic Friendship Firehouse on South Alfred Street in

ioritizing social media networks and management tools\, leveraging analyt
ics to grow your audience and engagement\, and how to build both passive
income and monetization for both visual and performing arts.\n

About the Presenters:\n
Substantial Art &\; Music\, LLC (SAM)
is a multimedia organization that provides consulting services to the vis
ual and performing arts community. SAM was founded in 2017\, by husband-a
nd-wife duo Stan ?Substantial? Robinson and Rachelle Etienne-Robinson. To
gether they provide design and consulting services to emerging and establ
ished independent artists\, entrepreneurs\, and organizations. SAM offers
professional advice and guidance through consultations\, workshops\, and
webinars. Additional services include graphic design and special events.
SAM has facilitated workshops at Amazon headquarters in Seattle\, Washin
gton\, the Hawaii State Art Museum\, Pratt Institute\, and multi-genre co
nventions. SAM events have been featured on WTOP\, Washington Informer\,
and Fox 5 DC.\n
