Dispose of them safely outside Police Headquarters through the "Take-B ack" initiative to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nThe Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from t he Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are collecting po tentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\ nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabine ts are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show t hat a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Am ericans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, of ten flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact o n the environment. \n\nAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency's Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) website \, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription and ov er-the-counter therapeutic drugs) are present in our nation's waterbodies \, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Proper disposal of prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic dr ugs can help reduce the impact to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThis o ne-day effort\, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration\, is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceu tical controlled substance abuse.
