ar/Detail.aspx?si=27868\n\nHave unwanted and expired prescription medicat
ions? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill abus
e and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will be c
ollecting unwanted medications at their headquarters as part of this nati
onal Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, w
ith cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandr
ia\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off
potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs a
nd other medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can b
e a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public h
ealth and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiati
ve addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many American
s are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly
susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority
of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, incl
uding from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not
know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing t
hem down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and hea
lth hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Ale
xandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and
economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environ
ment. \n\nThe service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked.\n\nLoca
