 Drug Take Back day. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria S
 heriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Co
 alition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Tak
 e Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted p
 rescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and destruction
 . These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptab
 le risk to public health and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids
 . \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health i
 ssue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home c
 abinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies s
 how that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family
  and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, ma
 ny Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine
 \, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both poten
 tial safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals 
 of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can
  live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their im
