DESCRIPTION:To verify info please see https://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calend
ar/Detail.aspx?si=25022\n\nHave unwanted and expired prescription medicat
ions? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill abus
e and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will be c
ollecting unwanted medications outside First Baptist Church as part of th
is national Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administ
ration. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Off
ice\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of A
lexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nD
rop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription
drugs and other medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drug
s can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to p
ublic health and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis i
nitiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many A
mericans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are
highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a m
ajority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends
\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans
do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flu
shing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety
and health hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-C
ity Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live health
ier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the
environment. \n\nThe service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked.\
