ar/Detail.aspx?si=25016\n\nHave unwanted and expired prescription medicat
ions? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill abus
e and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will be c
ollecting unwanted medications at Fire Station 210 as part of this nation
al Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administration. T
he Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, wit
h cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria
\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off p
otentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and
other medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be
a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public hea
lth and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative
addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans
are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly su
sceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority o
f abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, includ
ing from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not k
now how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing the
m down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and healt
h hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexa
ndria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and e
conomically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environme
nt. \n\nThe service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked.\n\nLocati
