  1800 and his new book\, First and Always: A New Portrait of George Washin
 gton.\nOn any short list of pivotal moments in American history\, the elec
 tion of 1800 will always have a central place. It is the first modern poli
 tical campaign in our history.  History does not repeat itself\, but it te
 nds to be repetitious because human nature repeats itself\, and one can fi
 nd surprising parallels between that election and our current election. Ad
 ding to its appeal\, the election of 1800 involved larger than life figure
 s - Thomas Jefferson\, Alexander Hamilton\, John Adams\, and Aaron Burr. \
 n  \nPeter R. Henriques is Professor of History\, Emeritus\, from George M
 ason University and author of Realistic Visionary: A Portrait of George Wa
