There wil l be a community celebration in the park on March 21 to commemorate the oc casion. \n\nBe among the first to see the new installation and meet the ar tist. Enjoy a day at the waterfront while DJ Kalo spins from 2 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. \n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies is the second in the Site See : New Views in Old Town annual public art series\, and will be on display through November 2020. It follows SOFTlab's Mirror Mirror\, which was on v iew in 2019.\n\nJeyifous' concept frames Alexandria's African American his tory through the lens of the city's industrial and merchant history from t he 17th to 20th centuries. Once a prosperous port city that was home to on e of the largest domestic slave trading firms in the country\, Alexandria was a major center for shipping and manufacturing with an economy inextric ably tied to the work of enslaved and free African Americans.\n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies seeks to stitch Alexandria's story together\, fe aturing symbols that represent Alexandria's merchant and manufacturing his tory\, inclusive of fishing\, flour\, tobacco and railways. The ground mur al incorporates African American quilting and textile traditions\, which a re historically tied to storytelling and oral tradition. When viewed as a whole\, the pattern becomes an abstract grid or map\, with the manufacturi ng icons appearing throughout. From this colorful and rich surface\, four large figures will face the water. Ornate metal profiles will be wrapped i n sculptural seating platforms that are illuminated in low light.\n\nThe S ite See public-art series highlights Waterfront Park as a civic space\, fo stering community engagement and interactions with the temporary installat ions. The artwork is informed by the historic waterfront and neighboring c ommunity. The compelling\, unique art attracts repeat visits from the metr opolitan area and beyond. \n\n\nLocation: Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St.\n Contact Email: arts@alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: A rts\, Family\, King Street\, Marina\, Old Town\, Parks\, Public Art & Memo rials\, Recreation\, Teens\, Tourism\, Visual Arts\, Waterfront\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal. aspx?id=1&si=29809 DTEND:20200321T233000Z DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z DTSTART:20200321T180000Z GEO:38.803380;-77.039641 LOCATION:Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St. SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CANCELLED SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Welcome: Wrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:08cff313-685d-462c-9ebe-475024e50560 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
