Gibbs\, on Monday\, November 11\, 2014\ , from 11:00 am -12:30 p.m. Due to limited seating reservations are encou raged. Please call 703.746.4356 to make reservations.\n\nJoin author\, lec turer\, and historian of the African Diaspora\, C.R. Gibbs in a probing ex amination of African American men and women and their roles in the First W orld War\, also known as the "Great War." He will chronicle their struggle to get the right to fight\, their battlefield heroism\, their matchless o ptimism in the face of blistering racism stateside and overseas\, as well as how their courage and resolve began an assault on the bastions of Jim C row that ignited the modern civil rights movement. In addition\, he will h ighlight the contributions of black Americans from the District of Columbi a\, Maryland\, and Virginia. With a host of rare maps\, priceless photog raphs\, and a perspective honed by years of intense study\, Gibbs will rev eal new and little-known personalities and largely-forgotten events in in his lecture.\n\nC.R. Gibbs is the author/coauthor of six books and a frequ ent national and international lecturer on an array of historical topics. He has appeared several times on the History Channel\, French and Belgian television\, and wrote\, researched and narrated "Sketches in Color\," a 1 3-part companion series to the PBS series\, "The Civil War\," for WHUT-TV\ , the Howard University television station. The Smithsonian Institution's Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture\, fea tures Gibbs among its scholars at the museum's Online Academy website. In 1989\, he founded the African History and Culture Lecture Series whose sc holars continue to provide free presentations at libraries\, churches\, an d other locations in the Washington-Baltimore area. In 1997\, he led 26 pe ople across Africa. In 2009\, the Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Brai ntrust honored Gibbs for his more than three decades of articles\, exhibit s and presentations on the military heritage of Africans and African Ameri cans.\n\nThe Alexandria Black History Museum is located at 902 Wythe Stree t\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22314\, in the Parker-Gray Historic District.
