 a's History Museum\, invites you to a reception showcasing the exhibition 
 "Alexandrians Fight The Great War." Visit our new exhibition\, learn about
  the life of World War I soldiers from re-enactors with living-history dis
 plays\, and enjoy refreshments including authentic World War I trench cake
 . The First World War - usually called "The Great War" before there was a 
 World War Two - was unlike any other armed conflict in human history. Euro
 pean armies sustained massive casualties during the first few years of the
  war with extensive trench lines along the Western Front offering scant pr
 otection from unprecedented artillery barrages\, machine guns\, and poison
  gas. Overall\, there were eight million and a half deaths and nearly thre
 e times that many wounded. "Alexandrians Fight the Great War" tells some o
 f the stories of Alexandrians who served during World War I - their feelin
 gs about this nearly incomprehensible world tragedy\, their early efforts 
 to help\, and their more active participation in the war effort after Amer
