Long-segregated neighborhood s and nearly abandoned industrial districts have given way to the attracti ve mix of quaint streets and homes\, historic sites\, boutique retail and unique dining that today draws residents and visitors alike. On Wednesday October 22\, at 7:30 PM\, two City preservation planners describe this ch ange as it relates to one of Alexandria's oldest neighborhoods\, known as Parker-Gray.\n \nCatherine Miliaras and Stephanie Sample present "Alexand ria's Parker-Gray District: Then and Now" at The Lyceum --- Alexandria's H istory Museum\, for the Alexandria Historical Society. Lightly settled un til after the Civil War\, Parker-Gray was originally known as "Uptown\," a n African-American neighborhood with a strong commercial core centered on Queen and North Henry Streets. The name Parker-Gray comes from two late-1 9th/early 20th-c. principals of local schools\, John Parker and Sarah Gray \, and the neighborhood makes up the historic northwest quadrant of what m ost people know as Old Town Alexandria.\n\nBy the late 1970's\, neighborho od residents faced threats to their historic community from urban renewal\ , the development of the Metro system\, as well as gentrification. Miliar as and Sample will put these issues into perspective in the larger world o f historic preservation\, and show how public action led to the establishm ent of the Parker-Gray Historic District.\n\nThe talk is free and open to the public\, and doors open at 7:00 PM. Parking is extremely limited at T he Lyceum itself\, but there are garages and street parking nearby.\n\n\nL ocation: Lyceum\nContact Person: Audrey Davis\nContact Phone: 703.746.4356 \nContact Email: Audrey.davis@alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may atten d\nTags: Black History Museum\, Lyceum\n\nImport this event into your cale ndar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=9304 DTEND:20141023T010000Z DTSTAMP:20141009T204155Z DTSTART:20141022T233000Z LOCATION:Lyceum SEQUENCE:5 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Saving An Old Part Of Old Town TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:18322c36-0e62-42e7-9037-e4f61ca7b96b X-COA-DTSTAMP:20141009T204155Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
