" These were crowded\, dangerous places\, yet some 12-15 percent of the Co nfederacy's slave population took almost unimaginable risks to reach them\ , and they became the first places Northerners came to know former slaves en masse. Ranging from stories of individuals to those of armies on the mo ve to the debates in Congress\, Troubled Refuge probes what the camps were really like and how former slaves and Union soldiers warily united there. \n\nChandra Manning is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University spe cializing in 19th century American History. She received her Ph.D. from H arvard University. Manning's previous book\, What This Cruel War Was Over: Soldiers\, Slavery\, and the Civil War\, won numerous accolades for her s cholarship.\n\n\n\nLocation: Black History Museum\, 902 Wythe St.\nContact Person: Audrey Davis\nContact Phone: 703.746.4356 \nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Black History Museum\, Lecture\, Museums\, Old & Historic Al exandria\, Parker Gray\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=14640 DTEND:20161021T010000Z DTSTAMP:20160926T181209Z DTSTART:20161020T230000Z GEO:38.812083;-77.048042 LOCATION:Black History Museum\, 902 Wythe St. SEQUENCE:5 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Lecture and Book Signing: Dr. Chandra Manning TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:a7fd8a42-db03-40f8-adc0-b19d72abe294 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20160926T181209Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
