The artifacts recovered tell the stor y of an effort in the early 19th century to operate the property as a tave rn and bathhouse. Unfortunately\, the times (the War of 1812 complicated life in Alexandria)\, and the inability to convince the good citizens of A lexandria that a warm bath was worth 50 cents\, doomed Shield's effort at increasing local hygiene.\nLight refreshments will be provided before the presentation\, followed by a brief FOFA meeting to highlight its recent ac tivities\, preview what is currently active in Fairfax County Archaeology\ , and to discuss FOFA's plans for future events and symposia. \n\n\nLocati on: No Location Specified\nContact Phone: 703.746.4399\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Archaeology Museum\, Old & Historic Alexandria\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal .aspx?id=1&si=11602 DTEND:20151003T050000Z DTSTAMP:20150928T171623Z DTSTART:20151003T050000Z SEQUENCE:4 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Shield's Folly: A Tavern and Bathhouse TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:8fa5aed9-12c2-46a1-99c3-a99064d69d47 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20150928T171623Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Archaeology Museum,Museums,Old & Historic Alexandria DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=11639\n\nKick off Virginia Arch aeology Month with a discussion of one of the most prolific writers and or ators of the 19th Century\, Frederick Douglass. Douglass devoted his caree r to the abolition of slavery and equality for African Americans. Benjamin Skolnik\, through Archaeology in Annapolis and the University of Maryland \, has turned to Douglass' writings to help locate and interpret the sites described in his autobiographies. Through this engagement\, we are incre asingly recognizing Douglass' importance not just as a guide to 19th Centu ry quarters and plantations\, but to understanding the ways in which ideas and ideologies can be understood\, combated\, and overcome.\n\nLocation: Alexandria Archaeology Museum\, 105 N.
