Both glorified for their g randeur and denounced for their central role in an early American economy based on slavery\, Virginia's plantations still fascinate us. Local author s Jai Williams and Charlene Giannetti explore the hidden stories of these historic icons in their new book\, Plantations of Virginia. Visiting 40 pl antations throughout the state\, the authors interviewed mansion guides to dig deeper and uncover little known accounts of life in these palatial ho mes. Williams lends her talents as a professional photographer to provide stunning pictures to accompany the stories. She will also share her views as an African American photographer working in the south and photographing the grand plantations of slave holders.\n \n\n\nLocation: Black History M useum\, 902 Wythe St.\nContact Phone: 703.746.4356\nAudience: Anyone may a ttend\nTags: Black History Museum\, Museums\, Old & Historic Alexandria\, Parker Gray\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandri ava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=16708 DTEND:20170923T170000Z DTSTAMP:20170923T145228Z DTSTART:20170923T150000Z GEO:38.812083;-77.048042 LOCATION:Black History Museum\, 902 Wythe St. SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Free Lecture-Plantations of Virginia TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:f56423ae-1da8-40c4-96b1-fa7383a90399 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20170923T145228Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Friendship Firehouse Museum,Museums,Old & Historic Alexandria,Ol d Town DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=16535\n\nMark Fire Prevention W eek and explore Alexandria's firefighting history on the "Blazing a Trail: Alexandria's Firefighting History" tour.
