The bags of arti facts will be sent to the laboratory in the Museum for processing.\n\nAll the necessary equipment will be furnished\, but please wear comfortable cl othes\, boots or sturdy shoes (no sandals)\, and bring a water bottle.\n\n \nTo accommodate the large demand for the popular Family Dig Day program\, the following policy has been established:\n\n\n$5/person. Fee is non-ref undable. Space is limited and reservations are required.\n\nIndividuals an d families are welcome. The publication\, by Joseph and Sh aron Scopin\, details White's story and his collection\, which was acciden tally found by the authors while cleaning out an elderly relative's baseme nt. \n\nLewis Cass White was a Union veteran of the 102nd Pennsylvania In fantry. He fought in 24 battles\, and served throughout the war until he lost a hand at Cedar Creek in the fall of 1864. Among the notable engagem ents he participated in was the Battle of Fort Stevens\, the only battle t o occur in the Civil War Defenses of Washington and the only time that an American president came under direct enemy fire while in office. White's collection of personal reminiscences\, a daily diary\, correspondence with fellow soldiers\, speeches\, and veterans' eyewitness accounts of Preside nt Lincoln under fire at Fort Stevens shed new light on the important even ts of that 1864 battle.\n\nThe book\, As I Remember\, features material an d objects from the Lewis Cass White collection\, as well as an introductio n by Defenses of Washington historian\, B. Franklin Cooling. The publicat ion will be offered at the book signing for the special price of $35\, whi ch includes tax. Only cash or check will be accepted. \n\nThe Lewis Cas s White Collection was recently donated to the City of Alexandria's Fort W ard Museum by the Scopins. Selected items from the collection will be on exhibit for the book signing event.\n\nFort Ward is the best preserved of the extensive system of Union forts that comprised the Civil War Defenses of Washington.
