Join City staff from the Office of Historic Alexandria who will lead a discussion on issues and ideas for demarcating and memorializing these sac red areas. Attendees will meet City staff in the parking lot behind Fort Ward Museum\, and walk to the four major burial sites. In the event of ra in\, the meeting will be held in the reception hall at Oakland Baptist Chu rch\, 3408 King Street\, Alexandria.\n\nFort Ward Park's cemetery areas an d burial sites are associated with the post-Civil War African American com munity known as "The Fort\," which developed on the grounds and vicinity o f the present-day Park beginning in the 1870s. The sites that are the foc us of discussion are: The Old Grave Yard\, established at least by 1897\; the Adams family burial site\, which includes the grave of community matri arch Clara Adams\; the Clark family burial site\; and the Jackson Cemetery \, established on land purchased by Fort resident James Jackson in 1884 th at was once part of the earlier Civil War Union fort. City archaeologists and historians will lead discussions at each area that provide context an d considerations for possible demarcation of some sites\, preservation iss ues\, and additional approaches to memorialization. Tours are every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Recommended for fans ages 8 and older.\n\nTours are capped at s ix people due to small spaces in the Museum and for the safety of our staf f and visitors. Masks are required for unvaccinated visitors and children under 12. For a private tour\, you may purchase all six tickets for your tour time (if available)\, even if there will be less than six people in y our group.
