Today\, some three dozen states recognize that special event. Since the first observance in June of 1865\, the holiday h as accumulated a host of fascinating myths and legends. Join CR Gibbs in a revealing look at the origins of and the real truth surrounding the histo ry of the black presence and the celebration of emancipation in the Lone S tar State in his The Secret History of Juneteenth. \nThis lecture\, co-spo nsored with the Alexandria Branch of the NAACP\, will be presented on Satu rday\, June 18\, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Alexandria Black History Museum. The event is free and open to the public\, and it is appropriate for all a ges. \nC.R. Gibbs is the author/co-author of six books and a respected lec turer on a variety of historical topics. A popular television guest\, Gibb s provided historical commentary for WUSA-TV\, Channel 9's coverage of the dedication of the King Memorial\, and has also appeared on the History Ch annel\, WHUT-TV (Howard University)\, and French and Belgian television. He has worked with Smithsonian Institution museums and is a D.C. Humanitie s Council scholar. \n\nIn February 2013\, he also appeared in the PBS docu mentary\, Meet Me at Equality on the 1963 March on Washington.
