There were other armies still in the field and ships at sea. The struggles of the US and Confederate armies may be better known than those of their navies\, but their sea stories are compelling. These battles resu lted in innovations in ship construction\, an important addition to intern ational law\, and even 19c. civilians' change from whale oil to kerosene a s a source of energy. There were naval engagements as far distant as the English Channel and off the north Pacific coast. Australia also figures i n the story of the last Confederate raider and one of its most feared.\n\n Mr. Connery's talk will focus on the remarkable journey of The Shenandoah\ , the only ship to carry the Confederate flag around the globe. She cause d disorder and devastation as she captured and sank 38 ships and took hund reds of prisoners in just a little more than a year. When she finally surr endered\, her flag was the last sovereign Confederate flag to be furled. Her legacy also includes an important development in international law.\n \nWilliam Connery is an award-winning author of two History Press books\, Civil War Northern Virginia 1861 and Mosby's Raids in Civil War Northern V irginia. His articles have appeared in the Civil War Courier\, the Civil War page of the Washington Times and other publications. A popular speake r to local groups about Civil War history\, he has a degree in history fro m the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and has lived in the Bush Hi ll neighborhood since 1989. He has been invited to bring his books for sig ning and sale.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Lloyd House\, 220 N.
