Drawing from the work of the Freedmen and Southern Societ y Project (FSSP) at the university\, Dr. Rowland will discuss the aspirati ons of former slaves following the end of the Civil War and their struggle to make freedom a reality. The FSSP is publishing Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation\, 1861-1867\, a multi-volume edition that documen ts the transition from slavery to freedom in the U.S. South. For further information on the project and a selection of documents from the volumes p ublished to date\, visit www.freedmen.umd.edu.\n\nThis spring\, we turn ou r attention to the end of the war\, and its aftermath . . . the ways that Americans viewed the struggle by 1865\, and began to form their own unders tanding of it even as veterans were still returning from battlefields.
