This program is free and open to the public.\n\nThe 2016 exhibiti on will display students' illustrations of their own family's struggles an d journeys to reach Alexandria\, perhaps from another country or situation . With the theme: "Journeys: Your Road to Alexandria\," students answere d the question\, "How did you come to Alexandria?" Were your ancestors se ttlers\, brought here as slaves\, immigrants looking for opportunity or fr eedom? The story of our city begins with journeys from all over the world . The struggle for freedom and equality begins with sharing our experienc es and stories with each other. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.'s life-long work for civil rights in America was a journey to freedom for justice and respect. \n\nThe Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition started as a con test in 1990. It was created by the Alexandria Society for the Preservatio n of Black Heritage\, Inc. (ASPBH)\, which highlighted the art work of Ale xandria City Public School students. The ASPBH is the friends group for th e Alexandria Black History Museum (formally known as the Alexandria Black History Resource Center). Under the leadership of two memorable society pr esidents\, Harry Burke and Carlton A. Funn Sr.\, the contest grew from a s mall exhibit and program held at the Alexandria Black History Museum\, to a larger exhibition held in the Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall in January and February of each year. In addition to the exhibition\, a formal progra m is held in City Hall honoring the legacy of Dr. King. In 2013\, the cont est became a Memorial Exhibition honoring the late ASPBH President Carlton A. Funn\, Sr. In 2014\, the exhibition and program returned to City Hall. The 2016 posters will remain on view in the Vola Lawson Lobby through th e month of February.\n\n\nLocation: City Hall\nContact Person: Audrey Davi s\nContact Phone: 703.746.4706\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Black H istory Museum\, Holiday Event\, Museums\, Old & Historic Alexandria\n\nImp ort this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/i Cal.aspx?id=1&si=12111 DTEND:20160215T220000Z DTSTAMP:20160105T165916Z DTSTART:20160215T140000Z LOCATION:City Hall SEQUENCE:4 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Annual MLK Jr Poster Exhibition TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:d023ab1c-0df4-456c-9134-28a697bfde6e X-COA-DTSTAMP:20160105T165916Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Apothecary Museum,Friendship Firehouse Museum,Gadsby's Tavern,Ly ceum DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=12380\n\nAll Historic Alexandri a Museums are closed because of the snow.
