Illustrated lecture: The Story of the Freedmen Cemetery Memorial Bas-Reliefs. Sculptor Joanna Blake will discuss her work which includes the two relief panels honoring those buried at the Alexandria's Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial and an eight by ten foot bronze sculpture commemorating the two-hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg in the War of 1812. Her design for the Virginia Women’s Monument in Richmond was selected as a semifinalist in a competition to commemorate the struggles and accomplishments of Virginia’s women throughout the state’s history.
