Event Details:Today, the City of Alexandria invites the community to join in the virtual remembrance of Benjamin Thomas, who was killed by a mob of 2,000 citizens who stormed the city jail on North St. Asaph Street in 1899. All are invited to visit alexandriava.gov/Historic and the virtual In Memoriam page to read the narrative of the lynching that was compiled by the research committee of the Alexandria Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Community Remembrance Project. The page also includes remarks from Mayor Justin Wilson and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne; an 1899 poem, Take Him Out! by Reverend A. A. Lott published in Colored American; and other community reflections on this lynching.
