Location:Lyceum
201 S. Washington St.
Event Details:The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum, invites you to a reception showcasing the exhibition “Alexandrians Fight The Great War.” Visit our new exhibition, learn about the life of World War I soldiers from re-enactors with living-history displays, and enjoy refreshments including authentic World War I trench cake. The First World War – usually called “The Great War” before there was a World War Two – was unlike any other armed conflict in human history. European armies sustained massive casualties during the first few years of the war with extensive trench lines along the Western Front offering scant protection from unprecedented artillery barrages, machine guns, and poison gas. Overall, there were eight million and a half deaths and nearly three times that many wounded. “Alexandrians Fight the Great War” tells some of the stories of Alexandrians who served during World War I – their feelings about this nearly incomprehensible world tragedy, their early efforts to help, and their more active participation in the war effort after America entered the war in April, 1917.
