Lecture: Remembering the Past

Title:Lecture: Remembering the Past
Date & Time:Thu Jun 2, 2016 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Location:Gadsby's Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal St. (Map This)
Event Details:Best known for his work as a historian documenting some of the Washington area’s most significant architectural losses, Dr. James Goode pursued similar research on Alexandria during the 1970s. He and the students working with him gathered dozens of photographs and bits of information about many Alexandria buildings which had been demolished over time, and his intent was to include this material in his landmark book Capital Losses: A Cultural History of Washington’s Destroyed Buildings (1979). While the section on Alexandria eventually had to be cut, Dr. Goode saved his collection of prints and notes and donated them to the City of Alexandria. Director of The Lyceum, Jim Mackay, will highlight some of these buildings and the history behind them, in a “virtual walking tour” of Alexandria’s lost architecture.
