Event Details:NOW HE BELONGS TO THE AGES: LINCOLN IN DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES

During his life, Abraham Lincoln elicited many reactions, ranging from adulation to execration. How did Lincoln, with little in his background to recommend him, gain the Presidency? How did he meet his challenges and accomplish his goals? How was he regarded in his public career, not only in the South, but also in the North, the region that had provided his electoral victory? How did he deal with allies and opponents? How did he change the concept of the Presidency and the structure of our republic? Why was and is he still a controversial figure? The time and manner of his death placed him almost beyond detached historical examination, but this sesquicentennial commemoration offers an opportunity to survey different views of Lincoln over time and into the present.

Stephen Smith is a reader and independent scholar of history. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Western Kentucky University and was a Rotary Foundation Scholar at the University of Nottingham in England. He also holds a J.D. degree from Duke University and completed the certificate course at the Lay School of Theology of Virginia Theological Seminary. He has practiced law privately and in the civil service, authored several reviews and articles for various publications, and given presentations on historical and other topics. Like Lincoln, he was born in Kentucky.
